Daddy's idea of humor!  We had soup for supper last night.  He set the table ~ this is what he placed down for me to eat my soup with!  Do you think he is trying to tell me something? ;P

Live Stations of the Cross...

Thursday evening, Katie participated in a 'Live' Stations of the Cross at church.  She was a narrator.  I actually took a ton of pictures but only a few turned out.  It was dark in the church, even using the flash didn't help.  Oh well!  At least I got a few :)  I also got a few pictures at the reception afterward.  Katie did a GREAT job!  She does not like speaking in public, so this was a HUGE deal for her :)  She was very nervous the day of the show, so much so that she was basically unable to do a whole lot of focusing on anything else!  It didn't help that the day before she had burned her chin with the curling iron ~ it left a pretty good sized burn blister on her chin.  This made her even more anxious about narrating!  We covered it with make~up for the performance ~ that helped a little :)

That is Katie at the podium, she did a really good job!

This young man is portraying Jesus when he begins to carry the cross to Calvary.

Here is Jesus again, this time he see's his mother.

Here the crowd is looking at Jesus after he has died on the cross.  All of the kids did a great job!

This is at the reception after the performance.  Jonathon was very excited to see green cupcakes at the table!  Samuel was also excited ~ he found green cookies!  (Can we say "HULK"?)

This precious little thing (who isn't so little anymore!) behaved very well during the show!

Our sweet, sweet Emma had a great time too!

Girls 4 Life...

Katie is a member of Girls 4 Life.  Yesterday they went to an abortion clinic for a silent prayer vigil.  The high school homeschooled kids (homeschoolers 4 life) were also there.  There weren't too many there when we first arrived, but it wasn't too long before more showed up! :)  Here are some pictures of our day yesterday!

And of course, our sweet boys!

Everyone was soooo well behaved while we waited for Katie (well, Andrea struggled!  She kept honking the horn with her knee :)

Finally found it!...

I have been missing my picture cord forever!!  That would be why there hasn't been much put on here lately!  Well, I found it!  Where? ~ you ask.  Well, EXACTLY where it was supposed to be!  I had looked in the basket several times and not seen it!  Here are a few pictures of what we've been doing lately!

No, he does not hold a pencil correctly!  I know this, I stress over this.  Enough said :)

I am leaving you with an awesome quote I read this morning on The Learning Network...

Why do children who are home schooled succeed so well that they are
often years ahead of their peers? They get to teach themselves using
materials given to them. They also have a built in reward system. IF
they finish so much learning, they get an instant reward. Plus, they can
change their study environment to what works best for them. Even
students that are tutored do better. I think we as educators need to
spend more time teaching the way students are home-schooled, and stop
putting kids in classrooms by grade. ”

Thoughts from a PS Convert

Tuesday, March 02, 2010

What happens when a state certified public school teacher decides to homeschool? An ego-check and a whole lot of learning.

In 2006, I took the leap from public school teacher to home-school mom for my kindergarten daughter. I did what most home-school mothers do and joined a home-school group for support. To be honest, I thought I would be lending most of the support. I had the elementary education degree and many successful years of teaching under my belt. They should be so lucky to have me in the group.

Ego check! They didn’t need my advice on materials. There is a whole world of home-school materials that is every bit as good as public school curriculum...

As I made my way into this world, I was amazed at all the new options and ideas I had never seen or heard of as a public school teacher. These parents had a right to snub me and my ego. They may not have had an elementary education degree or even stepped a foot in a classroom, but these parents had nothing to learn from me, and I had much to learn from them.

She goes on to say that maybe instead of pushing regulation on homeschoolers we should deregulate public education.

How about instead of fighting for more regulations on home-school parents, we fight for fewer regulations on public school teachers? I had some great teachers 30 years ago who did not face the same government regulations. I’m not saying teachers shouldn’t be held to a high standard – just maybe not one, single standard: the test.

Do we really want to put these same crazy regulations on home-school families? These parents are enjoying what they do and not getting one government cent to do it....

Sorry I can’t provide some dirt on the home-school community. Funny, they are just doing a great job – all without regulations.

Amen and Amen!
